Welcome to the home page of Bulgarian Children's Health Foundation (BCHF).

BCHF is a not for profit organization dedicated to enabling the treatment and prevention of Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) in Bulgaria. Retinopathy of Prematurity is a debilitating disease that gradually deprives prematurely born infants of their vision - leading to total blindness - unless it is monitored and treated at the first signs of its appearance. You can learn more about ROP by following these links: The Association for ROP and Related Diseases and ROP Schepens Institute.

The mission of Bulgarian Children's Health Foundation is to provide treatment options to infants who need of urgent surgical intervention to save their sight, and to establish a permanent program in Bulgaria for the prevention of ROP. You can support our effort by choosing one of the donation options below. If you wish to learn more about our organization or become involved as a volunteer, contact us at the email address at the end of this post. Donations are tax deductible in the U.S. Options to donate:

How We Fulfill Our Mission

BCHF fulfills its mission by:

  • Providing grants to infants with ROP in Bulgaria who need immediate eye surgery to save their sight at one of the established eye surgery clinics in either Western Europe or the United States. Funds are delivered directly to the treating hospital.
  • Enabling the transfer of medical equipment and expertise from the United States to Bulgaria for the treatment of ROP. We work with U.S. and Bulgarian hospitals and ophthalmologists to develop this program.
  • Working with health officials in Bulgaria to build a program for the routine screening of prematurely born infants 4-6 weeks after birth.

If you have questions or would like to volunteer please contact Konstantina Chilingirova or Zornitza Stefanova at info@bulgarianchildren.com.
